Robertson Abattoir only produces beef and lamb for South African Farm Assured Meat Group. And although the majority of which is Free Range, Robertson Abattoir does have its own lamb finishing kraals. This was built in 2009 primarily to help ensure consistent supply of lambs. The South African farming environment can be very harsh and unpredictable even in the best of years.
The most successful and experienced farmers can often find themselves unable to finish their lambs to a market ready state and in very bad years find themselves unable to sustain their livestock.
This is where the feedlot comes in. Robertson procures lambs from farmers who need to reduce their livestock numbers due to environmental conditions and places them in a state of the art feedlot. Here, the lambs are provided with nutritious feed, clean water and shelter until they are ready for market.
